Head of Teaching and Learning (Middle and High School)- American School 2025/2026
El Alsson British and ²ÝÝ®ÊÓÆµs is currently seeking an outstanding Head of Teaching and Learning—Middle and High School, to join our American School Team by 1st of September 2025.
Main Purpose of Job: The Head of T&L is responsible for the provision and continued improvement of effective teaching and learning in grades 6-12. S/He leads, manages, and supports curricular, instructional and assessment aspects of the G6-12 provision under the direction and support of the Head of Secondary School. The post holder leads and supports professional learning and development of all teaching staff. S/He serves as a member of the Senior School Leadership Team and the PK-12 Academic Leadership Team. The job holder works closely with school leaders to set direction and focus for development, implementation and evaluation of academic programs, instruction and assessment in alignment with the school vision, mission and goals. The post holder has initiative, can work both collaboratively and independently, is a change leader and facilitates positive working relationships with staff, students and parents.
Principal Accountabilities:
Curriculum and Instruction Leadership
- Develop, monitor and evaluate the development and implementation of HS and MS curriculum and instruction ensuring research-based best practice and that the school vision, mission and aims guides practice.
- Use a wide variety of data to evaluate curricular outcomes and overall student performance, liaising with HoDs to address gaps and discrepancies by making proposals for instructional or program improvements
- Lead HoDs and teachers, in sharing good instructional practice, including through researching, trialling and modelling instructional strategies (see Teacher Development below)
- Facilitate and monitor the ongoing articulation, documentation and review of G6-12 curriculum, instruction and assessment through close work with HoDs and subject coordinators.
- Liaise with ES Head of T&L to ensure curricular alignment and continuity through key transition years of schooling, including through facilitation of staff meetings and work groups.
- Maintain an up to date knowledge of current American and international trends in curriculum, instruction and assessment and use to inform decision making.
- Evaluate student learning experience through classroom / school-wide observation, and solicitation of student and parent feedback.
- Coordinate and lead the school-wide curriculum review and mapping process
- Direct and support the work of the MS and HS Curriculum Cohort
- Ensure that instructional resources to support the curriculum are available and utilized fully supporting HoDs with sourcing, evaluating, purchasing and implementing instructional and supporting resources
- Work with the Head of Guidance and Student Services to ensure programs offered meet needs of students in relation to college admissions. Make recommendations to the Head of Secondary and Principal for any changes needed.
- Guide and assist HoDs and SLT in monitoring the implementation of HS and MS curricular programs and the quality of teaching and learning in the HS/MS.
- Collaborate with senior leadership and HoDs to intervene when the quality of instruction hinders student learning.Ìý
- Discuss ongoing issues, exchange information and solve problems; keeping Head of Secondary apprised of any ongoing concerns or challenges.
- Lead the continuous review, updating and implementation of policies and procedures as assigned by the Head of Secondary to ensure the needs of students and smooth day to day running of academic programs in the MHS are met.
- Coordinate with relevant senior leaders and staff to review and update curriculum, instruction and assessment policies, practices and procedures.
- Ensure that policies and procedures are communicated clearly to relevant stakeholders
- Provide training, support and feedback to staff to ensure policies and procedures are implemented with fidelity, intervening to solve problems should they arise.
Assessment and Data Management
- Oversee the implementation and evaluation of ongoing external assessment programs and constructive use of student performance data.Ìý
- Direct and supervise the work of the External Assessment Coordinator who oversees the coordination of external testing programs (PSAT, MAP, AP)
- Collate and disseminate relevant data to the leadership team, HoDs and teachers, and support the use of data to inform instruction and decision-making.
- Coordinate with the National Exams Coordinator to ensure that relevant preparations for and communication of ministry exams are made and communicated to ensure smooth running of those exams in compliance with Ministry guidelines.Ìý
- Lead the work of school data teams in analysing performance data for overall trends and using data in ongoing curriculum, instruction and assessment planning as well as program development.
- Monitor and evaluate internal assessment planning, implementation and reporting at the departmental and classroom level to ensure ongoing assessment is varied, valid and fair, meets expectations of wise practice and the needs of students.
- Encourage and support research-based, balanced assessment practice including through the promotion and development of authentic performance assessments in all subject areas.
- Ensure assessment, grading and reporting policies and procedures are reviewed and updated, in collaboration with school leadership and staff, to meet the needs of students, academic programs and the vision, mission and aims of the school.Ìý
- Liaise with GLAs and HoDs to resolve assessment scheduling issues
- Engage in communications with students, parents and staff to enable them to understand the role of assessment in the learning process, and to resolve issues as they arise
Teacher Development and GrowthÂ
- Develop, implement and evaluate (in collaboration with the ES Head of T&L) a comprehensive and ongoing Professional Development Program that meets the needs of staff and the school.
- Work with school leadership, HoDs and teachers to gather information on the developmental needs of teachers and the school community and devise plans to address these needs annually.
- Develop an annual Professional Development and Growth Plan that meets staff needs and, where possible, allows for coordinated sharing of good practice between staff.
- Source, secure budgetary approval for, and manage logistics for internal and external PD
- Develop and maintain a Professional Development calendar and ensure this is communicated to staff
- Develop, implement and oversee a program of job-embedded professional learning, aimed at promoting professional growth for all teachers.
- Maintain an active presence in classrooms and around the school, providing regular constructive feedback to staff
- Contribute to the provision of professional development through faculty meetings and workshops as needed.
Communication and Record-Keeping
- Facilitate effective communication, decision making and record-keeping on teaching and learning matters.
- Set and communicate clear meeting agendas and minutes, documenting the work of the various groups as needed as needed.
- Maintain open lines of communication with the SLT and HoDs, informing of issues and matters arising and working with HoDs and SLT to resolve issues as appropriate
- Promote a data-driven, collaborative learning community through the development and support of teams and individuals, establishing positive working relationships based on a culture of respect and inclusion
School-wide Leadership and Planning
- Contribute and collaborate as an active member of the Senior Leadership Team, working with management and administrative staff to achieve the best outcomes for students and the school, including through active participation in the school improvement planning and implementation process.
- Participate as a member of the Senior School Senior Leadership Team, undertaking tasks and collaborating with other SLT as necessary to ensure the smooth running of the school on a shared campus
- Participate as a member of the American Senior School Leadership Team and American Whole Academic Leadership Team, undertaking tasks and collaborating with other SLT in order to ensure the organizational management and continuous improvement of the school and its programs and services.
- Be a visible presence in and around the school for staff, students and visitors.
- Participate in the school improvement planning process and assume direct responsibility for implementation and evaluation of designated school improvement-related tasks, reporting on progress as requested by the Principal.
- Be aware of scheduled school events and organizational processes and work to ensure that time-lines are adhered to so that goals are met
- Work closely with the Head of Secondary School and Head of Guidance and Student services to advise and provide information for long and short-term decision-making and planning.
- Provide information and support to the annual development of school staffing and timetable planning and assist in the process of timetable development as needed.
- Stay informed of evolving developments in local, American and international education which may impact students or program developments and advise leadership teams accordingly.Ìý
- Contribute to the recruitment, induction and evaluation of staff as directed by the Head of Secondary School.

You will need:
- A Teaching qualification that meets the requirements of your home-country (B.Ed, PGCE, GDE etc)
- Minimum 3 years post-qualification teaching experience in similar role and subject area.
- The willingness and ability to build positive relationships with students, staff and parents
Skills and Knowledge
- Experience of modeled creative acting styles and techniques encompassing varied history genres and performance techniques.
- Experience of working with highly aspirational and able students is essential
- Excellent interpersonal skills with both adults and children.
- Willingness and ability to work as part of a team.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to prioritize and organize your own work.
- Ability to work effectively to a high standard, on occasion, under pressure, meeting deadlines.
- Knowledge of Health and Safety & Safeguarding/Child Protection procedures and their application.
- Knowledge of computers and ability to use ICT tools for record-keeping and as an instructional tool.
- Ability to act as a secondary form tutor and offer enrichment and extracurricular activities
